Managing Phases
How to set up bracket and group-play phases, enter scores, and advance a competition.
This guide is for event managers and directors.
Phases define how a competition is played. You'll create one or more phases per competition and work through them in order — entering scores and advancing the draw as matches are completed.
Creating a phase
- Open the competition detail page and go to the Phases tab.
- Tap Add Phase.
- Choose a phase type:
- Bracket — Single-elimination tournament
- Group Play — Round-robin groups
- Configure the phase settings (see below), then tap Save.
Phases are played in the order they're created. The first phase must be completed before the second becomes active.
Setting up a bracket phase
When creating a bracket phase:
- Teams — Select which teams are in this bracket. You can include all competition teams or only a subset (e.g., only top teams advancing from group play).
- Match variant — Configure the scoring format (e.g., best of 3 games to 11).
- Teams per side — For team events, how many teams play on each side.
Once saved, the bracket draw is generated automatically. Teams are seeded based on their rating (if available) or placed randomly.
Entering bracket scores
- Open the bracket phase and find the match you're entering.
- Tap the match card.
- Enter the score for each game played (e.g., 11-6, 8-11, 11-9).
- Tap Save Score.
The bracket updates immediately — the winning team advances to the next round automatically.
Advancing the bracket
After all matches in a round are complete, the next round is unlocked. Continue entering scores round by round until a champion is determined.
Setting up a group-play phase
When creating a group-play phase:
- Teams — Select which teams are participating.
- Number of groups — How many groups to divide teams into.
- Ranking algorithm — How teams are ranked within their group (default: win percentage → head-to-head → point differential).
- Match variant — The scoring format for group matches.
Teams are distributed across groups. You can manually reassign teams to groups after the phase is created if needed.
Entering group play scores
- Open the group play phase and select a group.
- Find the match to score.
- Tap the match to open the score entry form.
- Enter scores per game and tap Save.
Standings update live as scores are entered.
Reading the standings
The standings table for each group shows:
| Column | Meaning |
|---|---|
| W | Wins |
| L | Losses |
| Win % | Win percentage |
| PD | Point differential |
| Rank | Current group rank |
Teams highlighted in green have clinched advancement (if advancement criteria are configured). Teams can have the same ranking if they haven't played yet.
Activating and completing phases
Phase status is controlled by staff:
- Activate a phase when play begins — this locks the team list and opens score entry.
- Complete a phase when all matches are done — this finalizes standings and unlocks the next phase (if one exists).
To change a phase's status, open the phase detail page and use the status controls in the staff panel.
Multiple phases in one competition
A common pattern is to run group play first to seed teams, then a bracket:
- Group Play (Phase 1) — All teams play. Top 2 from each group advance.
- Bracket (Phase 2) — Advancing teams are seeded into the bracket.
When creating Phase 2, you can select only the teams that advanced from Phase 1. The bracket is then generated with those teams.
