Phases & Brackets

How bracket and group-play phases work in Paddles Up competitions.

A phase is a stage of a competition. Phases define how matches are structured and played. A competition can have one or more phases, played sequentially.

Phase types

Bracket

A bracket phase is a single-elimination tournament draw. Teams are seeded into the bracket and play until only one team remains.

Key concepts:

  • Teams are arranged into rounds (e.g., Quarterfinals → Semifinals → Finals)
  • The loser of each match is eliminated
  • The winner advances to the next round
  • Staff enter scores after each match; the bracket updates automatically

The bracket view shows all rounds as a horizontal carousel. You can swipe or click through rounds to see matchups and results.

Group Play

A group play phase divides teams into groups that each play a round-robin schedule (every team plays every other team in the group). At the end, teams are ranked by their results.

Key concepts:

  • Teams are divided into groups (e.g., Group A, Group B)
  • Every team plays every other team in their group
  • Rankings are calculated based on wins, losses, and point differential
  • Top teams from each group can advance to a bracket phase

The group play view shows each group's schedule and a standings table with current rankings.

Phase statuses

StatusMeaning
PendingPhase is set up but play hasn't started
ActivePlay is underway; scores can be entered
CompletedAll matches are done; results are final

Only one phase is typically active at a time. Staff advance a competition through phases as play progresses.

Matches

Matches are the individual games within a phase. Each match has:

  • Two teams (or sides)
  • A scheduled time and court number (optional)
  • A score for each game played
  • A status: pending, in progress, or completed

Scores can be entered per-game (e.g., 11-6, 11-8) or as a single set score depending on the event format.

Ranking algorithm

For group-play phases, standings are calculated using a configurable ranking algorithm. The default ranking order is:

  1. Win percentage
  2. Head-to-head record (when tied)
  3. Point differential

Staff can configure which algorithm to apply when creating a group-play phase.
